Even though he had attained success as a rock star, Gabriel Gunn still carried a lot of emotional baggage on his back. Coming from a traumatic childhood and trouble filled years as a teen, he wasn’t on anyone’s list for Mr. Sunshine, yet his powerful, mesmerizing voice continued to sell out venues. In a seemingly random act of violence, Gabriel and his manager/best friend are attacked in the parking lot of a concert they had just wrapped up. Amelia White is with the stadium security, and after saving Gabriel’s life, she accompanies him to the hospital to stand guard.
Amelia has stood guard over Gabriel since the day of his birth. She is an angel with the sworn duty to make sure the evil slumbering inside Gabriel never awakens, and should that happen, she is to make sure Gabriel is neutralized as a threat to humanity.
Loved this book! It is dark and gritty, but with biting humor and a thread of optimism. I truly enjoy a story that can blur the lines between good and evil and not have a clear cut good or bad guy. The sexually charged relationship between an almost burned out Gabriel and Amelia who should not have any human emotions, keeps the reader on the edge. As each plot twist is introduced, you are not really sure how this might play out. This was my first foray into J.K. Coi’s work, so I wasn’t 100 percent positive that all wound end well. It ended well enough that I will definitely read the next book, and that’s all I’m saying.
The war between the angel factions has much more of an impact on the story than the demon/angel clash. This is where the blurring is really evident, because divine isn’t always good, at least not for our hero. Falling Hard forces the reader to ask some tough theological questions about redemption and salvation. This is not a piece of fluff book, but it is a vastly entertaining and intelligent book. If you’re looking for something to make you think and go hmmmm, that will tug on your emotions, and get your heart pumping at the same time, give this book a peep. You won’t be sorry.
